Yellow: A Slideshow

The colour yellow often demarcates and organizes space in public environments, yet its regularization and coding of that space is neither consistent nor universal. Often associated with the safety and security of the public, yellow figures into a distinctive palette (along with red, green, orange, black, and white) that directs and controls traffic or movement in space. Although yellow is commonly read as a warning to protect the public against hazards, it also functions as a safeguard against the destruction of privatized space or property. Josh Hite presents here a slideshow featuring his photographic observations of yellow in urban space. The public is invited to engage in a conversation on the chromatic coding of our environment and the various forms in which yellow, in particular, colours this context.

Host Biographies

Josh studied philosophy at Wilkes University in Pennsylvania and Bristol University in the UK before working and traveling throughout Europe, Asia, and the coastal US. Currently a student in the M.F.A. program at UBC, Josh is further pursuing an examination of the relationships between different systems operating in similar environments. His present work in photography documents urban systems vis-a-vis the concept of efficiency. Projects now under development include interventions in advertising and public space, wiring, shipping and receiving, waste disposal, and barriers.
