Oh, What a Blow That Phantom Gave Me! Screening

Taken from Cervantes’ Don Quijote, the exclamation Oh, What a Blow That Phantom Gave Me! was the title of Edmund Carpenter’s seminal work of anthropology and media studies from 1972.Over 20 years later, Carpenter’s work and life serve as the primary subject of a documentary film by John Bishop and Harald Prins. In this film, Carpenter ?comments on his wide-ranging fieldwork in the Canadian Arctic and Papua New Guinea, concepts of authenticity and truth in media and art, the relationship between anthropology and surrealism, and the impossibility of preserving culture.?—Oceania Newsletter, 2003.colourschool presents a screening of this documentary on the heels of the Belkin Satellite’s exhibition of the same time, which featured works by UBC’s current MFA students. link to belkin satellite site
