An Other Cosmos: A Method For Reaching Zones of Infinite Funkativity

Inspired by the oeuvre of Sun Ra, Parliament/Funkadelic’s exploration of ?outer space? in the 1970s constitutes a complex cosmology resistant to simple linear reduction. Raymond Boisjoly discusses here generative impulses behind the emergence of P-Funk’s cosmic mythology. With a professed aversion to specialized approaches concerning cultural matters, Raymond takes an alternate tack by examining so-called ?crisis cults? (nativistic movements such as the Ghost Dance), the possibility of pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact, and the concept of play as found in the works of Johan Huizinga and Roger Caillois. Music and video clips related to the talk are also presented for further discussion.

Host Biographies

Raymond Boisjoly is a recent graduate of Emily Carr Institute’s photography program. His recent work addresses the various possibilities of contact as a form of artistic production. These possibilities manifest themselves in very specific responses to a wide range of cultural phenomena from the de-translating of texts to works resisting mediation. An upcoming work negotiates the visual intersection of two cultures, First Nations and Heavy Metal.
